On the 13th of January, 2025, the President of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Luis A. Ferrao announced that over 64 programs would be eliminated between 2025 and 2026 if they do not get a sufficient number of students enrolled in them. The number of students attending the UPR has declined significantly as a direct result of cuts to social services across the archipelago by the Fiscal Control Board, or La Junta. Protestors were met with police brutality on Sunday July 9, 2023 at La Parguera in Lajas, Puerto Rico. The people were protesting illegal construction on the beach that has destroyed mangroves, a crucial first line of defense against hurricanes that prevent the coast from getting pushed back. Campamento Pelícano is a camp that began about a month ago in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico as a result of illegal construction on public land under the direction of Carlos Roman. The corrupt government refuses to act on the illegal construction, so protestors have taken it upon themselves to protect our land and water. Recently, there was a private security guard who shot a protestor in the leg.
