On the 13th of January, 2025, the President of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Luis A. Ferrao announced that over 64 programs would be eliminated between 2025 and 2026 if they do not get a sufficient number of students enrolled in them. The number of students attending the UPR has declined significantly as a direct result of cuts to social services across the archipelago by the Fiscal Control Board, or La Junta.
